If you do risky things you ll get infected regardless of what you use. That being said, MY personal preference for my XPSP3 is the free versions of avast, MBAM and SUPERAntispyware. Others use different things that work just as well. In case you were not aware, that MBAM, SAS and CCleaner are not anti-virus suites so your friend would still need an anti-virus scanner on his systems. Yes they all will work on both XP and Windows 7 and MBAM and SAS are great complementary anti-malware scanners to the anti-virus that is chosen. I did find with SAS though when I installed it that it asked if I wanted it to Load at startup.
I declined that on mine because these are generally used as once-a-week or so manual scanners and there is no need for them to run continuously in the background. In fact the free versions of those two do not allow for background scanning, but SAS still asked me. Just so you re aware.
