The external storage devices are a Sandisk Mini Cruzer USB memory stick & a Fostex Mr-8mk2 8-track digital recorder with a Transcend 2GB CF card.
I already downloaded & installed the drivers for the Fostex & Sandisk devices from their official website. When I connected the devices, the 'hardware database updating' message was displayed, followed by a 'Windows has found new hardware. I located the.INF files that I needed for these & copied the *.sys files that were necessary into a local directory.
Everything seemed to go okay. However, no drive letter is assigned in the 'My Computer' explorer window. In the Hardware Device Manager the device shows up, but with a yellow exclamation point. The reason given is that either the device is not functioning properly (which I verified is not the case, by successfully getting a drive letter assigned when connecting these devices to my other PC), or that the drivers assigned for this device are incorrect. I had this issue with another PC that was running an older version of Windows.
The solution in this case was to disconnect other devices which were taking up drive letters D: & E. Unfortunately, in this case, the D:, E: & F: drive letters are being used by other partitions on the internal hard drive. I read somewhere that the registry could be edited to 'force' a selected drive letter for the device.
